For thousands and thousands of years, if not more, more than 30k Sandhill Cranes have been wintering in the desert land of the Chiricahuas. But it wasn’t always desert here, long ago during the last Ice Age the southeastern part of Arizona, including northern Mexico were fertile marshland. It is here that bones of large browsers and grazers we call Mammoths and Mastodons, as well as ancient horses, jaguars, Camels, and these grand birds, the Sandhill cranes with their ancient gravelly voices continue to arrive on their annual migration with some arriving as far away as Siberia. These cranes greet each other every day, in mass chaos as they come together and depart in their family groups at sunrise and sunset. Its so beautifully amazing. Today I’m posting sunset shots.
